spaces are where I live. They are private, quiet, and personal. When I walk into a new space, I begin to disassemble it in my mind. I can see it as a series of shapes, colors, lines, and moods. I feel as though I am walking in a painting before I even begin. Then, I use my painting surface to reconstruct that space in my own way from memory. The painting acts as a microcosm where I can manipulate all of the elements. I work intuitively and I allow each layer of paint to react to the last. My paintings are not about a specific narrative, but I am interested in drawing from the structures of the world to create poetic images through unique combinations of forms. They are never done. They are always open and I pause when I can accept a particular picture that has surfaced. The French philosopher, Gaston Bachelard said that “we are able to experience resonances, sentimental repercussions, reminders of our past. But the image has touched the depths before it stirs the surface.”
